'Tis the season when McHenry County transforms into a dazzling spectacle of lights, decorations, nativity scenes, and whimsical inflatables. The festive spirit radiates from homes, cars, businesses, and even individuals, creating a magical atmosphere that can only mean one thing – Christmas is on the horizon.
Amidst the festive transformations lighting up McHenry County this season, a vibrant tapestry of celebrations and traditions comes to life, extending a warm invitation to all. While our county is predominantly Christian, we proudly stand as a home for diverse communities, including Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Quakers, and more. Every corner reflects the unique expressions of faith and culture, making this holiday season a celebration that embraces the rich diversity that defines us. So, let's embark on a journey through the enchanting lights and decorations that adorn our homes, recognizing that in McHenry County, everyone's story is woven into the fabric of this joyous season.
So, as we gather around with our families, whether by birth or by choice, regardless of our faith backgrounds, let's cherish the reminder that we are not alone. In McHenry County, every individual is welcomed to the table, fostering a sense of unity and togetherness that embodies the true spirit of the holiday season.
Now, what are we all serving? Do you have a traditional meal? Do you prefer potluck? Or, are you like me and find yourself wandering the aisles of the grocery store wondering what the heck you've gotten yourself into?
Well, our collection here at MCHS might be able to solve your problem!
Let's all gather around the table to dishes passed down to us by our predecessors.
The Harvard Ladies Society compiled a list of their favorite recipes in 1889. Why not try one of their cakes?
Then there's the Woodstock Woman's Club Cook Book from 1910. Maybe try one of their puddings.
How about some cookies from the Greenwood W.S.C.S. Cook Book from 1950?
Or, what about all the hunters out there? I hear it's duck season in most of Illinois this month. Why not give the Richmond Hunting Club's 1977 duck recipes a go?
And we're gonna need some sides, right? Try out these dishes collected by Thelan Total Construction in 1974 from the families whose homes they worked on.
Then there's the kids. What will we feed the kids!?!? Don't worry. The Little Leaguers have you covered. The 1961 Woodstock Little League compiled their favorites for you. Well...their mom's did ;)
Finally, let's not forget the bread. Try one, or two, or all of the Village of Union's treasured bread recipes.
Now, McHenry County, "Let's eat!"
